Mitsubishi's Versatile Rd23 Cylindrical Grinder Offers Fast Changeover and Simple Operation

April 4, 2000

The RD23 cylindrical grinder from Mitsubishi Machine Tools features a standard, built-in programmable locator, highly adjustable tailstock for fast changeover and a powerful CNC control for greatly simplified programming and operation.

The programmable locator, mounted directly on the wheel spindle stock, automatically finds workpiece position – eliminating tedious mechanical adjustments when workpiece length and diameter vary. An innovative, long stroke tailstock also eliminates taper adjustments within a 6-inch range.

When necessary, operators can make a fine taper adjustment of 0.00004 inches via a graduated knob on the tailstock.

The extremely simple programming system on the RD23 grinder requires just two data points – the diameter and z-position of the workpiece to begin grinding. All other grinding conditions are automatically determined by built-in programming functions. This automatic capability is standard and enables users to handle special shapes and contours more easily than ever before. For additional programming horsepower, operators can "cut and paste" between Mitsubishi and NC programs.

The RD23 is available as a 60-degree angular or plain-type cylindrical grinder. The multiple capability machine handles workpieces up to 5.9 in. dia. (150mm) with a 13.8 (350mm) center distance, weighing up to 176 lbs. (80kg). It also features a high precision, minimum feedrate control command value of 0.000004 in. (0.1m m) for a combination of accuracy and productivity that makes the RD Series a leader in this class.

As with the CNC programming, workpiece set-up is greatly simplified. One wrench (included as standard) is all that is required to set up the machine including wheel change.

Other standard features such as the highly rigid three-point supported bed (3 leveling pads included), special coolant system, and single point diamond nib wheel dresser minimize any effects of thermal distortion.

The RD23 is available with ball bearing or hydrostatic spindle design. Customers can also choose from among many other options including automatic sizing gauges, a table-mounted longitudinal positioning device, and a wide assortment of application oriented components.
