Now available from Chevalier is the Smart-1224
Now available from Chevalier is the Smart-1224, a conversational and G-code language CNC grinder with easy to use controls. The machine has a PC-based control with a 15" color monitor, RS232 port, 3.5 floppy disk drive for CAD/CAM files and soft key type alpha-numeric keyboard. This new model allows the operator to switch between manual, semi-automatic, fully automatic or CNC operation depending on work requirements. With its conversational control language, all the information is in an easy to use, question-and-answer format. The screen displays all the available grinding options such as profile and contour as well as 4 standard dressing modes. Canned cycles include slicing, plunge, criss-cross and step with optional hydraulic creep feed. There is a "macro zone" which allows the operator to create his own programs. The automatic wheel dressing can be done during machining or at end of cycle. The wheel dressing program is also in conversational format and offers a graphic display of the wheel shape to confirm accuracy. The new model uses a 7.5HP motor (opt 10HP) The cartridge type spindle has 4 class 7 (P4) high precision angular contact ball bearings. Labyrinth type seals are used in the front and rear of the spindle cartridge. The new spindle design is aircooled and is available with optional spindle chiller. The Y axis uses box ways which are Turcite-B coated and then precisely hand-scraped while the X and Z axes use needle roller bearings running on heavy duty slide rails. A counter balance in the spindle vertical drive provides greater downfeeding accuracy. The hydraulic tank has a 2HP motor and is much wider and deeper to accommodate more coolant. The downfeed and crossfeed axis use class C3 hardened and ground ballscrews, driven by Mitsubishi AC servo motors which permits more precise positioning. A cog belt ensures no-slip operation under all machining conditions. The table stroke adjusting mechanism is now inside the saddle, eliminating interference during loading and unloading of workpieces. The Y and Z axes have MPG and electronic handwheel, respectively, for manual axis operation. The machine utilizes a fully automatic lubrication system which continuously feeds oil to the column, table and saddle ways. The 12"x 24" table (16"x32" & 16"x40" also available) is fully supported underneath, preventing table overhangs.
