Now available from Chevalier is the Smart-818, a conversational and G-code language CNC grinder designed to provide simplicity, ease and versatility in the surface grinding process. The machine has a PC-based control with a 15" color monitor and full alphanumeric keyboard which allows the operator to switch between manual, semi-automatic, fully automatic or CNC operation depending on work requirements. With its conversational control language, al the information is in an easy to use, question-and-answer format. The screen displays all the available grinding options such as profile and contour as well as canned cycles such as: slicing, plunge, criss-cross, step and hydraulic creep feed.

The control also features a "simulation mode" which allows the operator to quickly program those single-part runs that are frequently performed by moldmakers and toolrooms. The automatic wheel-dressing program is also in a conversational format with a graphic display of the wheel shape shown to easily confirm its accuracy. The 2HP spindle motor with cartridge type spindle utilizes 4 angular contact bearings. A counter balance attached to the spindle provides greater downfeeding accuracy. Unlike other models that do not have spindle-cooling units, the Smart-818 has been designed to accept an optional air or liquid cooling unit to minimize temperature increases during peak operations.

The hand-scraped, Turcite-B coated longitudinal table ways are a double "V" design rather than the traditional one "V" and one flat way system. This feature allows better accuracy when performing delicate side grinding operations. The hydraulic unit is housed in a separate unit so as not to expose the machine base to high temperature or vibration. The downfeed and crossfeed axis feature ¾" class C2 hardened and ground ballscrews, driven by Mitsubishi AC servo motors which permits more precise positioning. The machine utilizes a fully automatic lubrication system, which continuously feeds oil to the column, table and saddle ways. The table is designed so that there is never any overhang from the saddles. As with other Chevalier machines, the base is cast in a one-piece design using the proven Meehanite hardening process and honeycombed ribs for stability.
