Automating GD&T Inspection with PolyWorks V7

Source: InnovMetric Software
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada -- InnovMetric Software Inc. announces an outstanding new version of its PolyWorks inspection and reverse engineering solution. This breakthrough release concludes an extraordinary year in which InnovMetric sold 154 seats of PolyWorks to Toyota Motor, and made important sales to major car manufacturers such as GM, Ford, Audi, BMW, and VW.

PolyWorks/Inspector is a solution that reads in CAD models, digitized point clouds, and allows users to measure dimensions and directly compare points to CAD surfaces and boundaries. PolyWorks/Inspector V7 now offers the first user-programmable solution for:

  • Identifying nominal CAD features
  • Defining measurements that should be obtained on CAD features
  • Setting datum features and specifying tolerances
  • Automatically extracting features from the digitized datasets
  • Generating pass/fail reports

This remarkable solution works with both small and huge point clouds produced by laser and optical digitizers, CMMs, articulated arms and laser trackers. Target applications include:

  • Automatic hole inspection of sheet metal panels
  • Automatic inspection of castings
  • Automatic inspection of prismatic features of plastic parts

PolyWorks/Inspector also offers a complete toolset for comparing data cross-sections to CAD cross-sections, measuring gaps in assemblies, generating color plots and producing outstanding snapshots and animated reports. Inspection can be completely automated through a powerful macro programming language.

PolyWorks/Modeler, InnovMetric's flagship polygonal reverse engineering solution, has also been considerably enhanced:

  • All curve tools have been redesigned and optimized for speed and performance. Users now have access to very powerful edge & corner fitting and reconstruction tools.
  • Several new tools have been developed for preparing polygonal models for aerodynamic simulation. For example, users can now optimize triangle aspect ratios, compute projected areas, and select special triangle configurations that are not appropriate for repairing them.
  • Finally, PolyWorks can now handle both organized and unorganized point clouds, making it possible to apply its remarkable polygonal modeling technology to datasets captured by laser-based digitizers mounted on articulated arms.

"The new release of PolyWorks is really amazing. We have released seven beta versions through the year, which generated continuous market feedback from hundreds of power users. We expect that our programmable, configurable, and automatic inspection solution will generate a huge interest from manufacturers that need a flexible, quick, repeatable, and automatic inspection process," said Marc Soucy, president of InnovMetric Software.

Founded in 1994, InnovMetric Software Inc., headquartered in Quebec City, Canada, is a world leader in inspection and polygonal reverse engineering solutions for manufacturing applications. Its flagship product PolyWorks is used by major automotive/aerospace manufacturers throughout the world, including Audi, BMW, Boeing, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Mazda, Lockheed-Martin, Northrup-Grumman, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
