Daewoo Heavy Industries America Corp.50 machine tool distributors and salesmen were on hand at the annual Daewoo International Machine Tools Fair held during September at the Daewoo's Changwon, Korea manufacturing plant. During this one-week session, the company unveiled 17 new machine that are either immediately available, or that are expected to be available within the next 12 months.

Highlighting the show was the new Mynx500, a 20 Hp vertical spindle motor that's priced under $70,000 and has just now become available in North America. Key features of the Mynx500 are high spindle speeds, 945 ipm rapid traverses, heavy Meehanite castings, oversized ball screws and servo drives, and a 24-tool magazine with a quick 1.5 sec. tool-to-tool time. The Mynx 500 is suitable for parts of 40.1" x 19.7" x 20.1", and offers positioning accuracy of +/-00020" and repeatability of +/0.00008". According to the manufacturer, it's compactly designed, and has the muscle, speed and precision to tackle tough milling assignment and finish them fast.

Other machining centers displayed at the Fair include families of high performance VMCs and HMCs with spindle speeds topping 12,000 rpm and rapid traverses of
1575 ipm. Also on hand were high power machines, sporting massive castings and extra-large integral box ways that are designed specifically for heavy cuts in hard materials.

Among the turning centers nearing completion are both horizontals and verticals, and include single and multiple spindle models; machines designed exclusively for the manufacture of aluminum wheel hubs, Y-axis turning centers, and high-productivity designs with built-in gantries. A long bed Lynx 200L joins other Lynx turning center as an economical alternative when speed and power are mandated.

Also unveiled was a 2-member family of high-productivity horizontal boring mills. Both machines sport powerful 35 Hp spindle motors, exceptional rigidity, and a surprisingly small footprint. Maximum table loads for the two machines are 22,000 lbs. and 33,000 lbs.
