Merrill Tool & Machine Adds Part Capability With 5-Axis Mill

Merrill Tool & Machine (a Merrill Technologies Group Company) has significantly expanded its parts machining capabilities with the installation of an enormous Mazak Versatech V-140N 5-axis milling machine. Touted as the largest of its kind in the United States, the Versatech V-140N arrived at Merrill Tool & Machine’s 120,000ft2 facility on 19 semi-trucks and took a week to unload. The machine means the company can now offer customers unmatched precision machining services for workpieces as big as tractor-trailer cabs.

Merrill Tool & Machine’s fifth facility expansion, a 20,000ft2 area, houses the massive Mazak double-column vertical machining center. The Versatech V-140N’s versatility contributes superbly to Merrill Tool and Machine’s dedication to the continuous expansion of its manufacturing capabilities. The machine not only provides broader processing in terms of part size, but also onboard inspection capability with a Renishaw Probing System.

The machine’s dual pallet changing system that can be loaded with up to 60,000 lb per pallet contributes to Merrill Tool & Machine’s efforts of maximizing efficiency and productivity.  Multiple projects can be programmed, set-up, and machined in continuous multi-tasking operations without interrupting the machine spindle head.  The 5-axis spindle head permits B and C rotary axes machining in .0001 degree increments for accurately processing highly complex parts.

The machine’s 50hp integral spindle motor headstock, pumping out a 10,000rpm maximum spindle speed and 253.7ft/lb maximum torque, produces superior surface finishes on non-ferrous and aluminum materials. And while at low speeds, it easily handles heavy-duty metal removal.
