Haas Mini Mill Boosts Job Shop Profits

From its inception, the new Mini Mill (16" x 12" x 10" xyz travels) from Haas Automation has been a very popular machine. With its unique combination of big features, compact footprint and small price, the diminutive VMC appeals not only to small shops, but large ones as well.

For smaller shops or those just starting out, the Mini Mill provides an affordable first step into CNC, or a way to increase capacity without breaking the bank. For large shops and those firmly established in the industry, the Mini Mill is a capable, small-footprint (6.5' x 6.5') machine that's perfect for performing second operations, or for machining smaller jobs that would otherwise tie up a bigger machine.

The Mini Mill features a 40-taper vector-drive spindle that accepts standard CT 40 tools, and it comes equipped with the same easy-to-use Haas CNC control found on every Haas machine. A 7.5-hp direct-drive spindle yields speeds to 6,000 rpm for cutting aluminum, yet provides 40 ft-lb of torque for cutting steel. Cutting feedrates up to 500 ipm are possible on the Mini Mill, with rapids of 710 ipm for fast cycle times. The Mini Mill's 36" x 12" table (28.75" T-slot length) provides plenty of room for fixturing, and a 10-pocket automatic tool changer comes standard.

According to Bob Murray, Operations Manager at Haas Automation, the demand for the Mini Mill has been tremendous. "We knew it would be a popular machine," he said, "but the response has been even better than we expected." Haas anticipated the demand and established a separate production line exclusively for the Mini Mill. By October 2000, 120 Mini Mills per month were rolling off the Haas production line, with more planned to meet customer orders. With the completion of a new addition to the Haas facility in the Spring of 2001, capacity for the small machines is expected to climb to 200 per month.

Base priced at less than $30,000, the new Mini Mill from Haas is a compact solution with big advantages.
