Russell T. Gilman, Inc., An SKF CompanyKF TOS-EX Series is a lubrication system that allows higher spindle operation speeds. By injecting a smaller amount of oil into the spindle bearings over a shorter period of time, the spindle remains at a lower temperature, allowing higher speeds. The new unit injects one-tenth of the volume of oil per shot as compared to existing oil lubricators. This smaller amount of oil allows the injections to be more frequent, smoothing temperature fluctuations and lowering the peak temperature the spindle bearing will reach between lubrication shots. The unit can deliver as low as .0012 cc of oil injection every few minutes.

The Series has up to eight outlets. Each outlet's oil volume delivery is controlled independently from the others.

The lubricator was designed to meet the needs of the new generation of high-speed vertical machining centers and grinding machines. At speeds between 12-15,000 RPM, grease lubricated spindles require reapplication of grease and the disassembly of the spindle. Previous oil spot-lubricator technology would not permit injection of less than .01 cc per shot over a 16-min. period and therefore could not eliminate temperature fluctuations. Temperature fluctuations are especially critical for cylindrical roller bearings and during the start-up of the spindle before saturation.

The SKF TOS-EX Series lubricator is retrofitable to any spindle designed for air oil lubrication. An optional "shot detector" is available to confirm that lubrication is being delivered to each outlet. The unit is only 100 mm in diameter and 330 mm tall.
