Raycon Corp. appoints new CEO
Raycon Corp. (Ann Arbor, Michigan) has appointed Norman J. Scherr, Jr., as its new Chief Executive Officer. Scherr was previously Vice President and General Manager of Chelsea based Ann Arbor Machine Company's EDM Division which he helped launch in 1992. Raycon is a leading manufacturer of production EDM (Electrical Discharge Machinery), ECM (Electro Chemical Machinery) and laser manufacturing systems serving automotive and aerospace precision machinery markets worldwide. The action is expected to bolster Raycon's technological development capabilities and improve its efforts to capture more world wide market share in these areas. Raycon was recently purchased from the defunct TransTec Group and now operates as a subsidiary of Amchem Group, which is owned by MP Industries based in the UK.
"I am delighted to be able to return to the operation that helped launch my career in industrial lasers and EDM," said Scherr. "The founders of Raycon, John Check and Gary Rupert, gave me a start. They were innovative and imaginative. We want to rekindle that kind of thinking and expand Raycon technology and operations beyond its present scope. With MP Industries' solid commitment, we can take Raycon to a dominant position in its fields of expertise on a global basis."
Richard Trinder, CEO of Amchem Group and a member of the board of directors of MP Industries, added "Norm brings to us significant experience in our industry with a combination of technical expertise in both software and hardware and in-depth management experience. He is the kind of successful team builder who can make the right things happen."
Scherr graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 1971 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and recently completed his Masters in Business Administration at Michigan, also graduating with honors in 1996.
Scherr's career started with Valeron Corporation (now GTE) Digital Techniques Division where he was Chief Electrical Engineer. Scherr's first encounter with Raycon was in 1976 as a consulting engineer, developing the first microprocessor-driven motion and gaging systems for Raycon.
In 1977, Scherr led the team that produced Raycon's first commercial microprocessor driven EDM. Later, his consulting efforts resulted in numerous products and patents for Raycon through the years. Following a buyout of Raycon by Swiss-based Charmilles, he was appointed Engineering Manager of EDM manufacturing operations and helped launch the successful R40 series of machines.
