Tri-Tech Head Transforms 3-Axis Machine to 5-Axis Performer

Tri-Tech Head Transforms 3-Axis Machine to 5-Axis Performer

Tri-Tech Precision Products Inc (Anaheim, CA) has added an important new capability to its Model 5411 5-axis programmable head attachment. The volumetric calibration feature has been developed in its entirety benefiting the end user with 3D calibration of all five axes at the tool tip of the 5-axis spindle head. Shown at Westec, the M5411 5-axis head attaches to virtually any 3-axis vertical or horizontal milling center to provide true simultaneous 5-axis machining and drilling capability.

The Model 5411 5-axis programmable head measures about 8.5 in. in diameter by 12 in. in length and weighs about 140 lb.

Also new this year is a fully machine-independent 2-axis control that can be used to position the 5-axis spindle head totally independent of the machine's 3-axis control This feature provides 5-axis positioning of the head without the cost of the upgrading the control to a fully integrated 5-axis control.

The M5411 uses the host machine's own spindle drive, which transfers directly to the tool at a ratio of 1:1. This portable head attachment is designed t handle the most complex machining including full 5-axis profiling, contouring, slots, and holes. The M5411 includes a holding fixture enabling a quick installation time of less than 30 minutes. The solid steel head attachment weights about 140 lb and is compact enough to adapt to many small to mid-size machines. The head measures about 8.5 in diameter by 12 in. in length.

Requirements to accommodate the M5411 include any 5-axis capable controller; 5-axis capable CAM software' and a 5-axis post processor available through Tri-Tech. The M5411 has been adapted to various small to mid-sized CNC machines including Fadal and Haas VMCs, Lucas and Matsuura HMCs, and Mighty and Giddings & Lewis bridge machines.

Tri-Tech Precision Products, which a prototype NC machine shop, designed and developed a programmable 2-axis spindle head for attachment to its existing 3-axis NC machining centers for its own competitive machining needs. It recognized the market potential for the invention and produced a commercial version of the device for attachment to any 3-axis CNC machine and introduced it two years ago at Westec.

Tri-Tech's Model 5411 is priced at retail for $47,800, plus machine-specific servomotors and adapters.
